SUMMARY:Detroit Music Weekend
DESCRIPTION:DETROT MUSIC WEEKEND IS BACK! — JULY 2\, 2022 FROM NOON – 10PM \nA BLUES FESTIVAL CELEBRATION OF THE MUSIC OF JOHN LEE HOOKER! \nLaunched in 2017 with a headline performance by Miss Aretha Franklin\, Detroit Music Weekend is the music event that draws the world’s attention to Detroit’s broad and deep music talent. This year\, with ‘The Best Blues Fest in the Midwest’\, we pay tribute to the artistry of John Lee Hooker\, who was working as a janitor in Detroit at the time of the release of his first hit single\, ‘Boogie Chillen’. \nHooker played often at the bars and clubs on Hastings Street in the heart of Detroit’s Black entertainment district of the time\, Paradise Valley. In a city noted for its pianists\, guitar players were scarce. Hooker’s popularity grew quickly and – seeking an instrument louder than his acoustic guitar – he picked up his first electric guitar. He is considered the master and originator of the electric guitar-style adaptation of the Delta blues\, and the ultimate embodiment of cool. \nDaughter Zakiya Hooker — an accomplished artist in her own right — will be present to accept the Mayor’s Key to the City on her father’s behalf. \nThe Festival celebrates “Women of the Blues” with a jam-packed top-notch lineup of national artists and hometown stars. Zakiya Hooker will perform along with Ana Popovic\, Bettye LaVette\, Thornetta Davis\, Eliza Neals and Tosha Owens. \nJimmy D. Scott wsg Kern Brantley\, Howard Glazer & Harmonica Shah and many others fill out the bill that includes the coveted ‘Juried Showcase Stage’ inside Aretha’s Jazz Café where six up-and-coming musicians or groups will be chosen from the hundreds of submissions received on the DMW website portal for a chance at a high-visibility set of their own. Finalists will be announced June 24th. \nDetroit Music Weekend is free and open to the public. Stick around for the late-night open mic blues jam in Aretha’s Jazz Café inside the Music Hall.

SUMMARY:My Fair Lady
DESCRIPTION:From Lincoln Center Theater that brought you The King & I and South Pacific\, comes “a sumptuous new production of the most perfect musical of all time” (Entertainment Weekly)\, Lerner & Loewe’s MY FAIR LADY.  Director Bartlett Sher’s glowing production is “thrilling\, glorious and better than it ever was” (New York Times).  “Every so often a revival comes along that reminds you how indispensable great theater can be” (NY1). \nBoasting such classic songs as “I Could Have Danced All Night\,” “The Rain in Spain\,” “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly” and “On the Street Where You Live\,” MY FAIR LADY tells the story of Eliza Doolittle\, a young Cockney flower seller\, and Henry Higgins\, a linguistics professor who is determined to transform her into his idea of a “proper lady.”  But who is really being transformed?

SUMMARY:Hastings Street
DESCRIPTION:“HASTINGS STREET explores the lives of the Carson family as they fight for the city they while navigating being uprooted on a personal and community-wide basis. It’s the summer of 1949 and Detroit is electric with anticipation. Congress had just passed the Housing Act\, a law that ushers in a nationwide urban renewal initiative. Black Bottom\, Detroit’s segregated Black neighborhood\, is the local target for redevelopment. \nThis is not what Robert\, Sr. and his wife\, Beatrice\, expected when they moved North to build a life. Now that she’s gone\, he’s at a loss as to what to do. It’s the moment when his twins\, Bobby and Renita\, must balance their dreams for the future against the expectations of others and their responsibilities to one another. All in all\, HASTINGS STREET is a celebration of the inextinguishable spirit of Detroit and its people.”

SUMMARY:Dionne Warwick
DESCRIPTION:Born Marie Dionne Warrick on December 12\, 1940\, in East Orange\, New Jersey\, Dionne Warwick has enjoyed a tremendously long career as a singer. She comes from a gospel musical background as the daughter of a record promoter and a gospel group manager and performer. As a teenager\, Warwick started up her group\, the Gospelaires\, with her sister\, Dee Dee\, and aunt Cissy Houston. \nAfter finishing high school in 1959\, Warwick pursued her passion at the Hartt College of Music in Hartford\, Connecticut. She also landed some work with her group singing backing vocals for recording sessions in New York City. During one session\, Warwick met Burt Bacharach. Bacharach hired her to record demos featuring songs written by him and lyricist Hal David. A record executive liked Warwick’s demo so much that Warwick got her own record deal. \nIn 1962\, Warwick released her first single\, “Don’t Make Me Over.” It became a hit the following year. A typo on the record led to an accidental name. Instead of “Dionne Warrick\,” the label read “Dionne Warwick.” She decided to keep the new moniker and went on to greater chart success. In 1964\, Warwick had two Top 10 singles with “Anyone Who Had a Heart” and “Walk On By”—both penned by Bacharach and David. “Walk On By” was also her first No. 1 R&B hit. \nMore hits\, including many written by Bacharach and David\, followed as the 1960s progressed. “Message to Michael” made the Top 10 in 1966\, and her version of “I Say A Little Prayer” climbed as high as the No. 4 spot the following year. Warwick also found great success with her contributions to movie soundtracks. The theme song for the 1967 film Alfie\, starring Michael Caine\, was a solid success for her\, as was “Valley of the Dolls\,” from the 1968 movie of the same name. \nIn 1968\, Warwick had other hits\, including her trademark tune “Do You Know the Way to San Jose\,” which earned Warwick her first Grammy Award. That same year\, Warwick made history as the first African-American woman to perform for Queen Elizabeth II in England. \nWarwick reached the top of the pop charts for the first time in 1974 with “Then Came You\,” which she recorded with the Spinners. But then Warwick suffered a career slump for several years. In 1979\, she made a triumphant return to the charts with the ballad “I’ll Never Love This Way Again.” She also soon became a fixture on television with the music program Solid Gold\, which she hosted in the early 1980s. Warwick also had several successful collaborative efforts. In 1982\, she made the charts with “Friends In Love” with Johnny Mathis\, and “Heart Breaker” with Barry Gibb. \nAround this time\, Warwick scored one of the biggest hits of her career with “That’s What Friends Are For.” Stevie Wonder\, Elton John and Gladys Knight also appeared on this 1985 No. 1 hit\, which was an AIDS charity single written by Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager. “Love Power\,” her duet with Jeffrey Osbourne two years later\, marked her next major hit.

SUMMARY:Melissa Etheridge
DESCRIPTION:Melissa Etheridge is one of rock music’s great female icons. Her critically acclaimed eponymous debut album was certified double platinum. Etheridge’s popularity built around such memorable songs as “Bring Me Some Water\,” “No Souvenirs” and “Ain’t It Heavy” for which she won her first Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal. Etheridge hit her commercial and artistic stride with her fourth album\, Yes I Am\, featuring the massive hits “I’m the Only One” and “Come to My Window\,” a searing song of longing that brought her a second Grammy. The six times platinum album spent more than two and a half years on the album chart. Etheridge is also an Oscar winner for Best Original Song in 2007. In 2011 Melissa made her Broadway debut as St. Jimmy in Green Day’s rock opera\, American Idiot\, where she replaced Billie Joe Armstrong for one week\, and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Etheridge is scheduled to release Memphis Rock and Soul\, a new album honoring Stax Records\, in fall of 2016. She recently completed recording at Royal Studios in Memphis on what will be her first album since 2014’s critically lauded This Is M.E. \nOn June 20\, 2016\, Etheridge released a song called “Pulse.” The singer wrote the song in reaction to the mass shootings that took place in Orlando on June 12\, 2016. As she told Rolling Stone\, “We want to try to make sense. We want to try to heal. We want to bring some meaning\, some purpose. We also want to put it down forever in history. That’s how I’m coping.” All proceeds from the sale of “Pulse” will benefit Equality Florida\, the states largest LGBT civil rights organization.

SUMMARY:Travis Tritt
DESCRIPTION:Music has carried Travis Tritt on a lot of amazing adventures. From helping reunite the legendary Eagles to being mentored by such icons as Waylon Jennings\, Kenny Rogers\, and Charlie Daniels to becoming a member of the Grand Ole Opry\, music has opened many doors that the talented Georgia native has boldly walked through and left his own indelible mark. And the adventure is far from over. With the release of Set in Stone\, Tritt embarks on the next chapter of his stellar career armed with the distinctive voice\, insightful songwriting\, and outlaw edge that have served him well for more than three decades. \n“When we told people\, I was getting ready to go back in and record the first studio album I’d done in 13 years\, they said\, ‘Well\, what kind of album is it going to be?’ The only answer I could come up with is\, ‘It’s going to be a Travis Tritt album\,’ and a Travis Tritt album to me represents everything I’ve ever done\,” says Tritt\, who co-wrote eight of the album’s 11 tracks. “I’ve always tried to take all of the influences that I have which are across all different genres. I love straight-ahead country. I love the old stuff\, the great storytelling songs\, songs that make you feel something with the lyrics that they are relatable. There’s the Southern rock influence that I’ve always tried to showcase in every album\, the blues influence that I’ve had all my life\, the old Southern gospel stuff\, bluegrass\, all of those different things.”

SUMMARY:An Evening With Yacht Rock Revue
DESCRIPTION:Yacht Rock Revue is hitting the road for a 2022 U.S. Tour criss-crossing the nation for 36 dates over the spring and summer that’s sure to leave an inoffensive amount of smooth in its wake. From New York City to Los Angeles and pretty much everywhere in between\, the 9-piece ensemble will bring their buoyant take on ‘70s and ‘80s soft rock to the masses on a new scale. According to Entertainment Weekly\, their shows are “unabashedly joyous affairs.” \n“We play Hall & Oates\, Michael McDonald\, Kenny Loggins and Toto with the on-stage energy of Van Halen or AC/DC. Actually don’t print that – it’s our secret sauce\,” said YRR singer Nicholas Niespodziani. The hits-packed set list will include a couple of new summer jam singles – one penned by the band and one classic cover – that the band is releasing on streaming services this spring. \n“This is our first real tour in almost three years\, so we’ve got a lot of energy built up\,” Niespodziani said. “We’ve got new songs\, new old songs\, new dance moves… plus all the stuff we do that you already know and love.” This tour hits iconic venues including Fiddler’s Green in Colorado\, Wolf Trap in Washington D.C.\, Pier 17 in New York and two nights of home-field advantage at Chastain Park in Atlanta. \nAfter building an even stronger connection with their fans via multiple weekly at-home streaming shows during the pandemic\, the band is ready to melt some faces IRL. “I think the whole world is past-due to get out and f#%king PARTY. And it just so happens\, that’s our specialty\,” Niespodziani said. Public on sale is Friday\, February 4 at 10:00AM local time and tickets are available at yachtrockrevue.com.

SUMMARY:Chazz Palminteri in a Bronx Tale
DESCRIPTION:Bronx-born and raised Chazz Palminteri was a natural choice to continue the Italianate torch in film. In the tradition set forth in the 1970s by such icons as director Martin Scorsese and actors Robert De Niro\, Al Pacino\, John Cazale and Joe Pesci\, Palminteri has brought grit\, muscle and an evocative realism to the sidewalks of his New York neighborhood\, violent as they are and were.\nChazz was born Calogero Lorenzo Palminteri in 1952 in the Bronx\, New York\, the son of Rose\, a homemaker\, and Lorenzo Palminteri\, a bus driver. He grew up in a tough area of the Bronx\, giving him the life lessons that would later prove very useful to his career. He graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School and started out pursuing his craft in 1973 studying at the Actor’s Studio. He appeared off-Broadway in the early 1980s while paying his dues as a bouncer and doorman in nightclubs\, among other jobs.\nIn 1986 he headed west and found that his ethnic qualifications was well-suited for getting tough-talker parts. Slick attorneys\, unflinching hoods and hard-nosed cops were all part of his ethnic streetwise persona in such TV shows as Wiseguy (1987)\, Matlock (1986) and Hill Street Blues (1981). In films he started off playing a 1930s-style gangster in Sylvester Stallone‘s Oscar (1991). Although his roles were sharp\, well-acted and with a distinct edge to them\, there was nothing in them to show that he was capable of stronger leading parts.\nIn 1988 he wrote for himself a play entitled “A Bronx Tale\,” a powerful one-man stage commentary in which he depicted his bruising childhood in great detail\, which included witnessing gangland slayings. Palminteri brought each and every character to life (18 in all) in this autobiographical piece — his friends\, enemies\, even his own family. He showcased for years in both Los Angeles and New York\, finally sparking the interest of his film idol\, Robert De Niro. DeNiro\, wanting to direct for the first time\, saw the potential of this project and brought both it and the actor/writer to the screen. Palminteri played one of the flashier roles\, Sonny\, a gangster\, in the movie version. An unknown film commodity at the time\, Chazz had stubbornly refused to sell his stage property (the offers went into the seven figures) unless he was part of the package as both actor and screenwriter. DeNiro\, who became his mentor\, backed him up all the way\, and the rest is history. A Bronx Tale (1993)\, which featured his actress/producer/wife Gianna Palminteri\, earned strong reviews.\nAt age 41 Palminteri had become an “overnight” star. Other important projects quickly fell his way. He received a well-deserved Oscar nomination the following year for his portrayal of a Runyonesque hit man in Woody Allen‘s hilarious jazz-era comedy Bullets Over Broadway (1994). He was on the right side of the law in both The Perez Family (1995)\, his first romantic lead\, and then the classic crimer The Usual Suspects (1995). He played the ill-fated brute in Diabolique (1996) and wrote a second screenplay\, Faithful (1996)\, in which he again plays a hit man\, terrorizing both Cher and Ryan O’Neal.\nThough Palminteri was invariably drawn into a rather tight-fitting\, often violent typecast\, it has been a secure and flashy one that continues to run strong into the millennium. Surprisingly\, the one obvious show he missed out on was HBO’s The Sopranos (1999). True to form his trademark flesh-lipped snarl was spotted in gritty urban settings playing a “Hell’s Kitchen” cop in One Eyed King (2001) starring actor/producer Armand Assante; a pool hustler and mentor in Poolhall Junkies (2002); a mob boss in In the Fix (2005); a dirty cop in Running Scared (2006); the titular scam artist as Yonkers Joe (2008); a karaoke-loving Italian psychiatrist in Once More with Feeling (2009); and an abusive husband and father in Mighty Fine (2012).\nOther millennium filming includes starring presences in Body Armour (2007)\, The Dukes (2007)\, the title conman as Yonkers Joe (2008)\, Once More with Feeling (2009) and Mighty Fine (2012)\, as well as prime supports in Running Scared (2006)\, A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints (2006)\, Push (2006)\, Jolene (2008)\, Once Upon a Time in Queens (2013)\, Legend (2015)\, Vault (2019)\, Clover (2020). TV crime continues to occupy his time as well\, clocking in such series’ credits as Kojak (2005)\, Rizzoli & Isles (2010) and Godfather of Harlem (2019). Occasionally he will lighten up — as in his recurring role as Shorty on the popular sitcom Modern Family (2009).

SUMMARY:38 Special
DESCRIPTION:After more than four decades\, 38 SPECIAL continues to bring their signature blast of Southern Rock to over 100 cities a year. At each and every show\, thousands of audience members are amazed by the explosive power of the band’s performance. Their many Gold and Platinum album awards stand in testament to the endurance of a legendary powerhouse. \nWith sales in excess of 20 million\, most associate the band with their arena-rock pop smashes\, “Hold On Loosely\,” “Rockin’ Into the Night\,” “Caught Up in You\,” “Fantasy Girl\,” “If I’d Been the One\,” “Back Where You Belong\,” “Chain Lightnin’\,” “Second Chance\,” and more – Timeless hits that remain a staple at radio\, immediately recognizable from the first opening chord\, and paving the way to their present-day touring regimen. \nGuitarist/vocalist DON BARNES says it’s all about maintaining that intensity in their live shows. “We never wanted to be one of those bands that had maybe gotten a little soft or complacent over the years. We’re a team\, and it’s always been kind of an unspoken rule that we don’t slack up\, we stack up. We go out there every night to win.” \nCompleting the team is bassist BARRY DUNAWAY\, drummer GARY MOFFATT and keyboardist/vocalist BOBBY CAPPS. The most recent addition to the band is legendary virtuoso guitarist and vocalist JERRY RIGGS. \nFor 38 Special onstage\, it is a celebration of camaraderie and brotherhood\, a precision unit bringing the dedication and honesty to a long history of classic songs\, as well as surprisingly fresh new material. \nSince 1976\, the band has released more than 15 albums. And from the start\, they’ve toured relentlessly\, bringing their signature brand of ‘muscle and melody’ to fans worldwide. It is that steely determination that lives on in the hearts of these ‘Wild-Eyed Southern Boys.’ Barnes adds\, “This music keeps our wheels on the road. We’re a band that’s tried to stay honest with what has driven us over the years. We started out with nothing but bold determination to make our own history and to endure. Looking back now\, it has been our greatest pride to have persevered and attained that level of success and longevity. For us\, it’s the ultimate validation.” \n“The magic’s still there\,” adds Barnes. “It’s an emotional high for us to keep ‘bringing it’ after all these years. When those lights go down and we all walk up those steps to the stage and hear that crowd roar\, it’s a real rush to the head. It feels like we’re getting ready to strap ourselves in and it just takes off from there.” \nwww.38Special.com

SUMMARY:DJ Darryl G + DJ Stacey Hotwaxx Hale | House Party - OUTDOOR EVENT
DESCRIPTION:For DJ Darryl G it started out with a love of music and mixing on a Cassette Tapes. Later\, Darryl G went into his bedroom with 2 pieces of Vinyl and learned how to mix by playing the music and recording it. After a while he auditioned for WDRQ with one of those tapes when The Party Princess (Lisa Lisa) called and asked him to join the DRQ Alstars. Today\, working with such DJs as John Collins & Stacey Hale\, Darryl G  is doing guest spots and holding down several residencies. His love of all different kinds of music continues to be a driving force behind the sound that Dj Darryl G brings to an event. \nFor as long as there is music and those who faithfully dance\, there will always be a need for the Godmother of House Music\, DJ Stacey “Hotwaxx” Hale. Detroit’s first female of house music plays dance floor bangers and orchestral melodies with live music fusions. Hotwaxx Hale has made a massive impact in the American music culture\, whether it’s playing in famous theaters like the Apollo\, or legendary underground dance music clubs like ‘Studio 54\,’ and ‘The Warehouse.’ She also has an international presence\, which includes past performances in London\, Ibiza\, Berlin\, Amsterdam\, France\, Belgium\, Mexixo\, Toronto\, and across the USA. \nHotwaxx Hale is the first female DJ who played house music on the radio in Detroit in the late 80s\, and continues as a DJ to play a major role in curating the soundtrack of our lives for several decades. Thriving in the city that started techno\, she somehow maintains a perfect flow by tastefully blending house and techno with funk\, hip hop and Motown soul\, which is why she continues to have a diverse\, multi aged devoted following.
