SUMMARY:DJ Darryl G + DJ Stacey Hotwaxx Hale | House Party - OUTDOOR EVENT
DESCRIPTION:For DJ Darryl G it started out with a love of music and mixing on a Cassette Tapes. Later\, Darryl G went into his bedroom with 2 pieces of Vinyl and learned how to mix by playing the music and recording it. After a while he auditioned for WDRQ with one of those tapes when The Party Princess (Lisa Lisa) called and asked him to join the DRQ Alstars. Today\, working with such DJs as John Collins & Stacey Hale\, Darryl G  is doing guest spots and holding down several residencies. His love of all different kinds of music continues to be a driving force behind the sound that Dj Darryl G brings to an event. \nFor as long as there is music and those who faithfully dance\, there will always be a need for the Godmother of House Music\, DJ Stacey “Hotwaxx” Hale. Detroit’s first female of house music plays dance floor bangers and orchestral melodies with live music fusions. Hotwaxx Hale has made a massive impact in the American music culture\, whether it’s playing in famous theaters like the Apollo\, or legendary underground dance music clubs like ‘Studio 54\,’ and ‘The Warehouse.’ She also has an international presence\, which includes past performances in London\, Ibiza\, Berlin\, Amsterdam\, France\, Belgium\, Mexixo\, Toronto\, and across the USA. \nHotwaxx Hale is the first female DJ who played house music on the radio in Detroit in the late 80s\, and continues as a DJ to play a major role in curating the soundtrack of our lives for several decades. Thriving in the city that started techno\, she somehow maintains a perfect flow by tastefully blending house and techno with funk\, hip hop and Motown soul\, which is wxhy she continues to have a diverse\, multi aged devoted following.

SUMMARY:Omar Sosa & Seckou Keita Suba Trio
DESCRIPTION:SUBA Trio is the second recording and concert collaboration between 7-time GRAMMY-nominated pianist-composer-bandleader Omar Sosa and U.K.-based Senegalese kora master and singer Seckou Keita\, featuring folkloric Venezuelan percussionist Gustavo Ovalles.  The recording made NPR Music’s ’20 Best Albums of 2021’\, reached #1 on the Transglobal World Music Chart (December 2021)\, and received a 4-star review in Downbeat\, to mention just a few of hundreds of accolades.  SUBA Trio‘s debut in London at \nQueen Elizabeth Hall in November 2021 was sold-out. \nBoth charismatic and virtuoso performers\, Omar Sosa and Seckou Keita share a special musical chemistry that inspires audiences to their feet with a unique fusion of jazz and world music.  Each concert is an uplifting experience\, reflecting the close and compassionate listening of artists engaged in a captivating musical conversation.  London’s Morning Star newspaper writes\, “The unhurried elegance of what Sosa calls ‘minimalismo’ articulates this utterly modern musical idiom”.  And London’s Jazz Journal comments that SUBA is “suffused with the soulful spirit of song – music of archetypal vision and deeply heartening consequence.”  In the U.S.\, Jazz Weekly writes that SUBA “sounds like a serene sunset in the Sahel desert\, with sparkling stars\, spacious horizons\, and wondrous panoramas.”  And Downbeat describes the “otherwise impossible-to-categorize music as oceanic\, bridging the Atlantic from Cuba to Senegal”\, and offering “a genuine ‘world music’”.  Rounding out the Trio is the wonderful percussionist\, Gustavo Ovalles\, whose exceptional mastery of the maracas\, quitiplas\, and culo ‘e puya is truly remarkable

SUMMARY:La bohème
DESCRIPTION:How do we go from tragedy to hope? From death to life? From loneliness to love? In this visionary treatment of Puccini’s opus La bohème\, Detroit Opera does just that — by presenting the opera in reverse order. From finish to start\, from death to the promise of new love\, from loneliness and despair to the joy of friendships\, wine\, and song\, this reversal presents the characters and arias we love in a refreshing\, new vision of the story. Our favorite starving young artists and lovers survive to hope another day. \nPresented in the Detroit Opera House in a co-production with Boston Lyric Opera and Spoleto Festival USA\, this bold\, unconventional take on Puccini’s opus is itself a bohemian work of art: experimental\, nonconforming\, original. This production is the first to stage La bohème in reverse\, marking an impressive creative milestone for Detroit Opera as part of our vision for The Next 50.

SUMMARY:America
DESCRIPTION:America\, the perennial classic-rock favorite\, is continuing to celebrate its 50th Anniversary with their powerful performances. Founding members\, Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell (along with former band mate\, the late Dan Peek) met in high school in London in the late 1960s and quickly harmonized their way to the top of the charts on the strength of their signature song “A Horse With No Name.” America became a global household name and paved the way with an impressive string of hits following the success of their first #1 single. Forty plus years later\, these friends are still making music together\, touring the world and thrilling audiences with their timeless sound. \nAmerica’s journey has found them exploring a wide variety of musical terrain. Their best-known tunes\, which also include “I Need You\,” “Ventura Highway\,” “Don’t Cross The River\,” “Tin Man\,” “Lonely People\,” and “Sister Golden Hair” were cornerstones of 1970’s Top 40 and FM rock radio. Yet beyond their impressive catalog of hits\, listeners would discover there was always much more to America than surface perceptions. The combination of Gerry Beckley’s melodic pop rock and Dewey Bunnell’s use of folk-jazz elements\, slinky Latin-leaning rhythms and impressionistic lyric imagery contrasted well with Dan Peek’s more traditional country-rock leanings and highly personal lyrics. \nAmerica’s albums–six certified gold and/or platinum\, with their first greatest hits collection\, History\, hitting four plus million in sales–displayed a fuller range of the trio’s talents than did their singles. Their material encompassed an ambitious artistic swath; from effects-laden rockers to oddball medleys to soul-bearing ballads\, America displayed a flawless blend of disparate genres and styles as wide-open as the great American plains. \nEnjoying massive success early in their career\, America earned their stripes as musical soldiers on the battlefield amidst the excess\, craziness and chaos of the 70’s. The trio won the Grammy for Best New Artist in 1972 and began working with George Martin and Geoff Emerick in 1974. This successful team went on to record seven albums and several Top Ten hits\, including “Tin Man\,” “Sister Golden Hair” and “Lonely People.” \nBy the mid-70s\, inter-band conflicts combined with an exhaustive touring and recording schedule exacted its toll on the group. With Peek’s departure from the fold in 1977\, Gerry Beckley & Dewey Bunnell rose to the challenge and carried on as a duo. Shifts in sound and direction\, changes in producers and managers\, and a renewed dedication to the craft of songwriting helped rocket America to the upper reaches of the pop charts in 1982 with their smash single\, “You Can Do Magic.” During this tumultuous time in their career\, Beckley and Bunnell immersed themselves in their craft\, infusing a newfound maturity into their rich body of work. Their growth as singers\, songwriters and musicians has continued into the present day as illustrated by landmark releases such as 2000’s Highway 3-disc box set\, 2002’s Holiday Harmony\, an album comprised of seasonal classics and live showcases\, 2007’s Here & Now\, 2009’s Live In Concert: Wildwood Springs\, 2011’s Back Pages\, and 2015’s Lost And Found and America: Archives Vol. 1. \nIn 2020\, the band released their ultimate 8-disc anniversary box set\, Half Century (America Records)\, and streamed their concert special America–Live at the London Palladium for the very first time (it is commercially available as a DVD and CD). 2020 also saw the release of the book America\, the Band\, An Authorized Biography by journalist Jude Warne. She weaves original interviews with Beckley\, Bunnell\, and many others into a dynamic cultural history of America\, the band\, and America\, the nation. Billy Bob Thornton wrote the foreword. \nFrom their formative years\, America has been a band capable of transcending borders with its uplifting music and positive message. Embracing a rainbow of divergent cultures\, America’s audiences continue to grow\, comprising a loyal legion of first\, second and third generation fans\, all bearing testament to the group’s enduring appeal. “I think that the ingredients of the America sound are the basic fundamentals that translate internationally\,” explains Beckley. “The Italians are huge fans of dance music\, but they also love a ballad–they’re romantic at heart. It’s the same in the Far East. A lot of times in these countries\, we see people singing along\, and they don’t really know what the words mean. Music is truly the international language.”

SUMMARY:JIM BREUER
DESCRIPTION:The crazy state of the world today makes Breuer’s upcoming 2018 tour Jim Breuer Live all the more essential\, as we seek perspective and comic relief from the day to day insanity that drives our 24.7 news cycle and social media. Breuer’s set will be decidedly non-political\, but he will have much to impart about the foolishness of ruining our lives over media-generated frenzies that we have no control over. “My huge focus is\, listen\, stop getting caught up in the hoopla the news\, politics and all that jazz\,” he says. “If every day you wake up and you’re watching five to six hours of it\, it starts to darken your soul. If you spent even ten percent of that time on your wife\, husband\, child or someone else you love\, your personal life would get better and you could help so many people. I’m here to say that life isn’t that horrendous. Can you still eat? Can you still watch your 60” plasma TV? Call me when you have to eat a squirrel for breakfast\, okay? Do something you can control that’s good\, because you can’t fight hate with more hate. Let’s concentrate on the most important things in life.” \n“My job as a comic is to talk about the many great loves of my life\, recognizing that yes\, we are all on borrowed time but we can still enjoy life with a passion and not get caught up in all the madness\,” Breuer adds. “There are always things that can become an obstacle to our happiness\, and the big three for me that I smack into most are divisions in the family\, financial struggles and health issues. For me\, there’s no better feeling in the world than making someone laugh and knowing that I’ve inspired or healed someone. It’s nice when people tell me I’m funny\, but the ones that keep me going are the ones who come up to me and say\, ‘Can I just tell you\, I just lost my mom\, and you healed me. That’s the first time I’ve laughed in ages.’ Or ‘My wife and I were fighting\, we just experienced death. We knew seeing you was going to help. Thank you. We needed this so much.’ We’re not here for very long\, and we’re all stuck here together. Everybody needs to laugh and be uplifted. We’re here to take care of others. I’m on a mission to lift you in the only way I know how.”

SUMMARY:Shen Yun
DESCRIPTION:A Heritage Once Lost\nThe traditional Chinese culture Shen Yun presents cannot be seen anywhere else in the world—not even in China. There\, the ruling communist regime has viewed China’s rich spiritual and artistic heritage as a threat to its ideology and for decades tried to erase it. \nBut in 2006\, a group of Chinese artists came together in New York with a vision: to revive the best of China’s cultural heritage and share it with the world. They drew courage and inspiration from their practice of Falun Dafa—a spiritual discipline based on the principles of truthfulness\, compassion\, and tolerance. The company’s repertoire includes important works shedding light on the plight of people like them in communist China today. \nAfter a decade of performing around the world to sold-out audiences everywhere\, Shen Yun has brought a great civilization back from the brink of extinction. \nFull Houses Everywhere\n\n\n\nShen Yun is now the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company. Some people fly from other countries or drive hundreds of miles to see it. Others see the same performance five or six times. Why? Many say there are no words to describe it—you have to see it with your own eyes to find out. \nJoin us for the experience of a lifetime.
