“HASTINGS STREET explores the lives of the Carson family as they fight for the city they while navigating being uprooted on a personal and community-wide basis. It’s the summer of 1949 and Detroit is electric with anticipation. Congress had just passed the Housing Act, a law that ushers in a nationwide urban renewal initiative. Black Bottom, Detroit’s segregated Black neighborhood, is the local target for redevelopment.
This is not what Robert, Sr. and his wife, Beatrice, expected when they moved North to build a life. Now that she’s gone, he’s at a loss as to what to do. It’s the moment when his twins, Bobby and Renita, must balance their dreams for the future against the expectations of others and their responsibilities to one another. All in all, HASTINGS STREET is a celebration of the inextinguishable spirit of Detroit and its people.”
